Children and Young People

We have a growing number of children and young people at St Mary’s. Our Sunday School meets in the church vestry during the first part of the service for activities connected with the theme of the Mass, and then return to join the congregation in time for Holy Communion. We work closely with St Mary’s School, particularly through the weekly Wednesday afternoon Mass for KS1 / 2 children. Every year we run classes to prepare children for their first Holy Communion.

For smaller children there is an area at the back of the church with books and quiet toys.  Parents remain responsible for supervising their children during the service.

Children of any age are warmly welcome to participate in our worship. We have a thriving team of altar servers (for anyone who has made their First Communion). Full training and robes are given.

Our group for pre-school children and their parents / carers meets every Wednesday morning during term-time. A variety of activities are offered, along with free drinks and snacks. It’s a great opportunity for young children (and adults!) to make new friends.

We also have regular social events: recently these have included a trip to the cinema, a summer barbecue and a sponsored bike ride in a local park. The servers have an annual trip to a local restaurant. We also join in the church’s fundraising events by helping to run stalls.
